Like all mammals, red foxes reproduce sexually. The mating season of red foxes normally lasts from mid-autumn to early winter and females have one ovulation cycle per year. They have adapted so that they can be pregnant during hibernation and give birth in late winter or early spring. Most foxes reach sexual maturity within the first year of life. Newborn fox pups remain in the den for the first 4-8 weeks of their lives.
